Our Spotlight series lets us tell the stories of the people who make up the Lions & Tigers community. Stephanie Selin (she/her) is a Marketing Program Management Consultant working with Microsoft Philanthropies. Stephanie favors work that impacts people and has extensive experience in non-profits and philanthropy. She serves on the Board of SheJumps, a nonprofit focused on getting women and girls into outdoor activities.
ABOUT STEPHANIE
I grew up in the SF Bay Area, went to school in Colorado, moved to Seattle in the early 90’s without a job because the photos in the Chamber of Commerce brochure looked amazing (mailed, as this was early internet days!), then met my Seattle-native husband, and have been here ever since. In addition to my husband, Mark, my family includes two grown stepdaughters, 16-year-old twin daughters, two dogs, and a rabbit.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE
My professional background has ranged from technology sales and partner management to building an executive engagement program and leading a non-profit fundraising team, plus many roles in between. Consistent is my draw toward building relationships and delivering positive experiences and outcomes. I’m currently working in Microsoft Philanthropies on supporting and engaging community college students through a Cybersecurity Scholarship Program in partnership with the Last Mile Education Fund.
WHY L&T?
I had a short stint with L&T a couple of years ago, and jumped at the opportunity to return. I’m a strong believer and advocate for L&T’s approach in building high-impact and flexible teams that meet both client and consultant goals, and the purposeful focus on community and support for consultants is highly unique and valuable. I appreciate the opportunity to be part of the L&T team!
AREAS OF INTEREST & PASSIONS
My passions start with my family and include exploring the mountains by foot, ski, snowshoe and snowmobile. Any time I can be outside and physically active is a good day, and I often geocache as a way to find and explore new areas. Volunteering has also been a big part of my life, and I’m currently on the board of SheJumps, a national nonprofit focused on increasing the participation of women and girls in outdoor activities to nurture growth and transformation.
FAVORITE HIKE IN THE AREA?
For an in-city hike or walk I love St. Edward Park in Kenmore. The trees and landscape is beautiful, and you can either go the flat routes or get a workout on the more challenging paths. Plus my dog appreciates the swim in the lake midway through a loop, and is nearly dry by the time we get back to the car. Bonus if you go into the newly refurbished lodge for a snack or cocktail to celebrate afterward!
BENEFITS OF FLEXIBLE, HIGH-IMPACT WORK
I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a way that benefits me and my family and is both professionally and personally meaningful. By working remotely and part-time I’m able to be present for my family, contribute in a deep way to non-profit causes I care about, and have time for exercise or time off when I need it, all while leading and supporting interesting and impactful work projects. Win!
ADVICE FOR YOUR 2020 SELF
Appreciate quality time and experiences with your kids and hubby (which I did), and tackle the long-overdue photo album projects (which I didn’t do!).
ANY ADVICE FOR US?
Years ago I worked with a career coach who helped me think about my values and what lights me up, and I still have a tattered copy of the resulting “passion core elements” on my desk. I think it helps to understand ourselves (our strengths, what’s important to us) and try to align our work to our values but accept that there are trade-offs and allow ourselves some grace.
