Our Consultant Spotlight series lets us tell the stories of the people who make up the Lions & Tigers community. With a background in the public and private sectors, Becks Nguyen shifted her focus to OKR management and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion work as a consultant with Lions & Tigers. A self-described “pizza fanatic,” Becks enjoys checking out new restaurants and trying new recipes especially with her instant pot.
ABOUT BECKS
I am originally from Minneapolis, MN but I’ve lived all over the East Coast for the last 6-7 years including Virginia and North Carolina. I moved to Pacific Northwest about a year ago. It was a month before pandemic, so unfortunately that’s made it difficult to explore the Seattle area.
FAVORITE PLACE YOU’VE CALLED HOME
I loved D.C.! It was really cool to be in the middle of American politics, and I made a ton of great friends there. The food scene there is also amazing, and there is always a place to check out every weekend.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE
Half of my career has been focused in local, state, and federal government. The other half, for the last 5 years, was in the private sector in banking and at Microsoft through a contract role. I am currently doing OKR management and D&I/Culture work for a client. I’ve been with Lions & Tigers for 2 months and I’m project managing the Lions & Tigers DEI work as well.
AS A CHILD WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP
When I was younger, I wanted to be a brain surgeon.
WHY LIONS & TIGERS
What led me to Lions & Tigers was the core values that the company holds. They align with how and what I’d like to work on. So far, the Lions & Tigers team has been the highlight. I haven’t encountered such a great network of support before. I’ve been in different large organizations, but I wasn’t getting what I needed in terms of direction or development, and I definitely get that here. I am honestly stress-free, and I feel great. The work that I’m doing is very fulfilling and something I’m passionate about. It also helps me build my toolsets of skills.
WHAT DREW YOU TO DEI WORK
It stems back to my days in government. I worked at the White House in Presidential personnel, and one of the things we worked on was to try to get everyday Americans to get Presidential appointments within the Obama administration. One of the programs I helped with was called Open Doors where we worked to remove the barriers to entry for Presidential appointments, and it was accessible to everyday Americans.
CAREER GOAL
My dream goal would be to have a Chief of Staff role and after that a COO role.
AREAS OF INTEREST & PASSIONS
I love going to restaurants and trying new foods. I am a big pizza fanatic. During the pandemic, I am cooking a lot and learning to use small appliances more.
FAVORITE COOKING GADGET
Instant pot. It’s a life-changer.
BEST INSTANT POT RECIPE
Instant Pot Pot Roast! You can try the recipe here.
BIGGEST BENEFIT TO HIGH IMPACT, FLEXIBLE WORK
I enjoy being able to prioritize my work, life, and wellness. Having the flexibility to work when and where it’s best for me has helped me see what is important and also allow me to be my best.
FAVORITE MOVIE
My favorite movie is My Best Friend’s Wedding and my favorite show is Gossip Girl.
ADVICE TO OTHERS NAVIGATING CAREER TRANSITIONS
Don’t be afraid to tap into your network. There are a lot of opportunities that could present themselves in the future through your connections. Also don’t be afraid to take risks and rise above criticism of your choices. Someone might not understand the journey you’re on – that’s ok and keep going!
WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRAVEL TO POST-PANDEMIC
I would travel to Asia. I’d love to go to Vietnam. My parents are from Vietnam, and I’d love to see where they grew up and meet the family.
