Our Consultant Spotlight series lets us tell the stories of the people who make up the Lions & Tigers community. This week we get to know Danielle Bohn, an L&T Consultant who followed in her mother’s footsteps and served in the U.S. Air Force, loves to get creative in the kitchen, and spent time living abroad in Singapore.
ABOUT DANIELLE
I began my career as an Operations Manager in the United States Air Force. My mom and several aunts also served so it was a natural choice for me, and I was enamored with the idea of serving abroad. Eventually I was assigned to Grand Forks, ND – not exactly where I’d envisioned! However, I met my husband of nearly 10 years there, so it worked out. Together, we’ve lived in 4 U.S. cities and as expats in Singapore. We recently moved to Cleveland, and I’m loving the four seasons (even the snow) and the century-old architecture.
MOST MEMORABLE PART OF LIVING IN SINGAPORE
Living in Singapore was such a great chapter in my life mostly because of the exposure it gave me to other cultures and ways of living. This in turn gave me greater perspective into my own decisions and beliefs. Another HUGE benefit was the ability to try so many cuisines. Singapore is famous for their hawker centers, and because it’s such a diverse country, it’s possible to try dishes from anywhere in SE Asia- sometimes in one sitting!
PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE
Most of my professional career has been in marketing communications at Microsoft. I held several positions that allowed me to explore different facets of digital marketing- everything from managing web properties to running demand & nurture campaigns. Favorite memories include creating security hack-a-thon programs prior to Windows 10 launch. Lately, I’ve begun specializing in content marketing which is what I’m doing now for the Dynamics 365 group.
LESSONS LEARNED FROM TIME IN THE AIR FORCE
The first things that come to mind are integrity and teamwork. I learned to make my word count because others were relying on my contribution. That team mentality shows up in my work today. I try my best to keep commitments and show up for others when I can.
WHY LIONS & TIGERS
When I joined Lions & Tigers I needed a job that provided enough flexibility for me to care for my senior dog. It wasn’t until I began seeing the culture in action that I was truly hooked. Working with L&T is like working with my best friend- they just get me. They are a group of values-based folks who practice what they preach. Their flexible work model enables me to live my best life.
AREAS OF INTEREST & PASSIONS
I spend a lot of my free time thinking about food; not just the eating part though. You know that show on Food Network where you have to make a meal out of random ingredients- that’s my thing! Right now, I’m also enjoying my plants, watching backyard wildlife, and the Unf*ck your Brain podcast- an oldie but goodie. I never pass on the chance to take a walk or pet a dog.
BEST CREATION IN THE KITCHEN
I recently tried JustEgg and decided to replicate the same idea using mung bean flour. My version is like a pancake meets omelet and it’s delicious. It’s already a popular dish in Asian countries which means there are so many variations you can try using different seasonings and ingredients. My favorite is a savory Indian inspired version with turmeric, ginger, and cumin loaded veggies and served with coriander and mango chutney.
BENEFIT OF FLEXIBLE, HIGH IMPACT WORK
Flexible work equals balance. I used to be so brain-dead after work that the thought of giving energy to any outside interest was unfathomable. Now, I don’t feel the need to sacrifice or make trade-offs. I get to check all the boxes that are important to me while still actively participating in the workforce and contributing financially to my family.
IDEAL DATE NIGHT
One night my husband and I decided to discover what makes a spring roll so great. Is it because it’s fresh or fried? What is the right combination of herbs and balance of noodles? How big of a factor is the dipping sauce? We created a bracket system for scoring and set out on a “spring roll crawl” to five local restaurants. Anytime my husband and I are out exploring a new neighborhood and talking about food or drinks is my idea of a great time together.
ADVICE TO OTHERS NAVIGATING CAREER TRANSITIONS
I had an identity struggle when I left my corporate job. At the time, my peers were gaining professional success and I felt I was taking myself out of the game too early. I eventually realized that I was marching to someone else’s definition of success. I’d encourage anyone else navigating a similar decision to get curious about their own value system and accept that it may take a few “try-ons” before you find the right match. Remember, if it doesn’t work out, you can always go back… but it probably will.
